Aciclovir or acyclovir, chemical name acycloguanosine, is a guanine analogue antiviral drug, marketed under trade names such as (GSK). One of the most commonly-used antiviral drugs, it is primarily used for the treatment of herpes simplex virus infections, as well as in the treatment of herpes zoster (shingles).

What is Zovirax?
Zovirax is an antiviral drug. It slows the growth and spread of the herpes virus so that the body can fight off the infection. Zovirax will not cure herpes, but it can lessen the symptoms of the infection.
Zovirax is used to treat infections caused by herpes viruses. Illnesses caused by herpes viruses include genital herpes, cold sores, shingles, and chicken pox.
What should I discuss with my healthcare provider before taking Zovirax?
Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to Zovirax or valacyclovir (Valtrex). Before taking Zovirax, tell your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs, or if you have kidney disease. You may need a dosage adjustment or special tests during treatment. FDA pregnancy category B. This medication is not expected to be harmful to an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. Herpes virus can be passed from an infected mother to her baby during childbirth. If you have genital herpes, it is very important to prevent herpes lesions during your pregnancy so that you do not have a genital lesion when your baby is born. Zovirax passes into breast milk and may harm a nursing infant. Do not take this medication without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.

Zovirax cream is used for:
Treating cold sores on the face or lips that are caused by the herpes virus. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.
Zovirax cream is an antiviral. It works by stopping viral replication. However, Zovirax cream does not eliminate the herpes virus, it is not a cure, and it does not prevent transmission to others.
How to use Zovirax cream:
Use Zovirax cream as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.
Wash and completely dry your hands and the affected area. Apply the medicine only to the affected area and not to the surrounding skin. Gently rub the medicine in until it disappears. Wash your hands after using Zovirax Cream.
Do not bandage or wrap the area unless directed to do so by your doctor.
Do not bathe, shower, or swim right after using Zovirax Cream.
To clear up your infection completely, use Zovirax Cream for the full course of treatment. Keep using it even if you feel better in a few days.
For best results, use Zovirax Cream at the first sign of a cold sore (tingling, redness, itching, or bump).
If you miss a dose of Zovirax Cream, use it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not use 2 doses at once.
