Indications
Hydrochlorothiazide is a thiazide diuretic that helps prevent your body from absorbing too much salt, which can cause fluid retention.
Hydrochlorothiazide treats fluid retention (edema) in people with congestive heart failure, cirrhosis of the liver, or kidney disorders, or edema caused by taking steroids or estrogen. This medication is also used to treat high blood pressure.
Dosage
Hypertension: 25-50 mg daily. Max: 100 mg/day.
Edema 25-100 mg/day. Max: 200 mg/day.
PMT with edema 25-50 mg/day from 1st morning of symptoms until onset of menses.
Infant & childrenn 2.5 mg/kg body wt/day.
Children 2-12 yr Max: 37.5-100 mg/kg/day,
6 mth-2 yr Max: 12.5-37.5 mg/kg/day,
Max: 3.5 mg/kg/day. To be given in 2 divided doses.
Administration
Should be taken with food
Contraindication
Hypersensitivity. Pregnancy & lactation.
Precautions
Impaired hepatic & renal function. May impair glucose tolerance or precipitate hyperuricemia or gout.
Adverse Drug Reactions
Electrolyte imbalance, GI disturbances, musculoskeletal & CV effects, rash & hypersensitivity.
